#229-FAT TOMMY'S BBQ

Fat Tommy's BBQ on Urbanspoon
INSIDE THE FOOD COURT JUST OPENED 1 MONTH AGO
$3.75 THE K.C.-PORK SANDWICH

I SPOTTED THIS PLACE NEXT TO CSN ON MY SEARCH FOR A NEIGHBORHOOD ICE CREAM SPOT. THE FOOD COURT HERE ALWAYS HAS A NEW PLACE OPENING & WHEN I SAW A BBQ JOINT HAD JUST OPENED I NEARLY GOT IN AN ACCIDENT TRYING TO FLIP A B#$%*.

KC BBQ-RIBS,PORK,BRISKET & LINKS. GREAT PRICES-REAL CHEAP SANDWICHES UNDER $4.

THE MEAT IS REAL GOOD, THE SAUCE IS PROBABLY KC MASTERPIECE OR SOMETHING IT HAS THAT STORE BOUGHT FAKE SMOKE ADDED FLAVORING. (BUT THEY PUT IT ON THE SIDE) SO TRY IT OR DON'T.

THE BREAD IS THE BIG WINNER HERE. BEST SANDWICH BUN EVER!! TASTE HOMEMADE. THE PORK COULD USE A LITTLE CRUNCH AND ANOTHER CHOICE OF SAUCE BUT GREAT VALUE.

I WILL BE BACK OR HAVE THEM DELIVER. CHEAP & PRETTY DAMN DECENT. THEY SAY 100% WOOD SMOKED BBQ-I SAY IT'S VERY MILD IF ANY SMOKE FLAVOR BUT STILL DECENT.

I WENT BACK 2 DAYS LATER AND TRIED THE "BIG TEXAN" BRISKET SANDWICH. SHREDDED/PULLED BEEF ON A FANTASTIC ROLL/BUN. $5 STILL A NO-GO ON THE SAUCE BUT MEAT IS GOOD,A LITTLE SMOKY AND VERY TASTY

  1. I appreciate the fine comments on my bbq and the buns, I do have them made fresh daily at a local bakery and I don't use them the next day. I would like to let you know that I make the sauce here in 5 gallon batches and have been making this recipe for 25 years, it is not KC Masterpiece or any other commercial sauce. Thanks for stopping in and thanks for taking the time to post your thoughts. Looking forward to seeing you again.

  2. I tried Fat Tommy's out today. Had the Big Texan sandwich. The bun was very good, the meat had a pleasant taste but was a bit on the "mushy" side compared to what I prefer.

The sauce was served on the side. Normally I like my BBQ sauce to be somewhat subdued, not overly spicy. However this one was a little too bland for my taste. Not bad tasting in any way, but there just wasn't anything about it which really added to the sandwich. Perhaps I'll come back and try it on the ribs next time, maybe I'll like it better.

I also had a small cup of baked beans which were fair, but really not any better than some canned baked beans you can buy at the supermarket.

As for ambiance, well, there really isn't any to speak of. It's not easy to spot Fat Tommy's in the first place while driving along, but once you do you go into a building which houses a few other food places. There's a narrow concrete floored area with some table and swivel seats and nothing much to look at. Kind of depressing in a way. Next time I'll probably get my food to go.

All in all, and judging only from one visit, I'd say this place has potential. It is priced very fair for a BBQ joint, has very friendly workers and some nice menu items, although I would have liked to have been able to order french fries with my sandwich.

Next time I'm in that area I'll stop by and try something different on the menu and see how that compares to the sandwich. - John
